Putting the Art in STEAM
Yesterday, The Young Dreamers' Bookstore participated in the August Wilson African American Cultural Center's STEAM themed Community Day as an apart of our educational residency. During the community day, we had the privilege of facilitating our signature community program, The Read to Dream Experience !
This time, we explored the theme "Putting the Art into STEAM" by reading "Ablaze with Color," the inspiring biography of Alma Thomas. Through storytime, we discovered how Ms. Thomas drew inspiration from her family, nature, space, and her emotions. We also discussed how she boldly pursued her dream of becoming a full-time artist at age 70.
The children were amazed to learn that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made Ms. Thomas the first Black woman whose artwork hung in the White House. Her incredible story reminds us all that art can be sparked by anything, and it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
In addition to the story-time, families got the opportunity to purchase books that inspired their children to take small steps towards their big dreams. Lastly, kids who attended the Read to Dream Experience receive superhero capes and masks .
